Based in Seto, one of the most historically significant pottery regions in Japan, Mr. Nagae is a master of subtle refinement in his Nerikomi practice, also known as Neriage. A third-generation potter of Sarasagama, he transformed his family practice into one dedicated to highly-intricate craft.
He has received many awards at ceramic exhibitions.
Very few Nerikomi artisans embed his level of care into their craftsmanship as pressure to put works onto the market at speed is high.
The intricate nature of the Nerikomi technique can get visually intense at times but Nagae has mastered an ethereal balance between every pattern's density and delicacy.
