Six-footed Waveform Nerikomi Chawan

Profile

Shuko Gakuen focuses on providing community-based welfare services for people with additional learning needs, including skills training, pottery production and sale.

Here each student learns to master one stage in the Nerikomi process. The charity has turned this technique demanding many production stages into distributed job opportunities for service users.

Shuko Gakuen aims to promote the independence of its users in their daily lives and their social participation through employment.

In pottery making, they utilise a rare technique called Nerikomi, producing and selling a wide range of products including cups, plates, vases, and sake cups. Their "nerikomi chopstick rests," in particular, have been recognised for their high quality, winning awards in the Made in Kyoto Best Design Contest, a public competition.

As a facility providing daily living support, in addition to work, they support expressive activities such as drawing, creating, listening, and physical movement, and also provide specialised support for individuals with additional developmental needs.
