Mingei Potter Tsuneji Ueda was a master of the challenging technique Nerikomi or Neriage. He had apprenticed with the great Kawai Kanjiro, Soetsu Yanagi, Shoji Hamada and Kenkichi Tomimoto.
His work is exhibited and collected by important museums and galleries around the world.
He served as a committee member for the New Works Exhibition at the Japan Folk Crafts Museum.
1914 Born in Kyoto
1927 – 1931 Enrolled in and graduated from the Ceramics Department of Kyoto Municipal Second Technical School
1931 onwards, apprenticed with Kawai Kanjiro, Soetsu Yanagi, Shoji Hamada and Kenkichi Tomimoto
1937 Established the Kinozara-yama Kiln
1943 Traveled through Korea with Hamada and a folk art research group
1948 Soetsu Yanagi acquires his work for the Japan Folk Art Museum
1955 Assisted Kawai and was permitted to inherit his techniques
1962 Solo exhibitions
1963 Selected for International Exhibition of Contemporary Ceramics’ organised by the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo
1974 Oversaw design and construction of Kenkichi Tomimoto Memorial Museum
2006 Home designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property
